Department of Physics Visit to the Khewra Salt Mines

Wednesday, June 17, 2026

The Department of Physics, University of Management and Technology (UMT) organized an educational visit to the Khewra Salt Mines on 17 June 2026, providing students with valuable exposure to the scientific, technological, and industrial aspects of mining and mineral extraction.

The visit offered students an opportunity to explore the underground mining environment and observe the processes associated with the extraction and handling of salt and mineral resources. Students gained practical insight into mining operations, geological formations, mineral extraction techniques, mine ventilation, illumination, rock mechanics, and safety practices.

The visit also demonstrated the relevance of physics to the mining and mineral extraction industry. Students were able to relate their academic knowledge of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, geophysics, materials science, and measurement techniques to practical industrial applications.

The educational visit was facilitated by faculty members of the Department of Physics, including Dr Muhammad Imran Jamil, Dr Zaheer Hussain Shah, Dr Tanvir Hussain, Dr Arshad Majid Mirza, Dr Qayyum Zafar, Dr Muhammad Tahir, Hira Yaseen, Mr. Iyaz Islam and Mr. Imtiaz Ali.

Through this field-based learning experience, students developed a deeper appreciation of the intersection between physics, geology, engineering, and industrial technology, while gaining first-hand exposure to the scientific and technological practices involved in the mining and mineral extraction sector.

The visit provided a meaningful opportunity to bridge classroom learning with real-world industrial applications, contributing to students' practical understanding of physics and its role in modern industry.
