Guest Lecture: "The Physics of Flight: How Airplanes Defy Gravity"
Department of Physics, University of Management and Technology (UMT)
The Department of Physics, UMT, organized a guest lecture titled "The Physics of Flight: How Airplanes Defy Gravity", delivered by Ms. Meelad Aslam, Lecturer, Department of Aviation, UMT.
Date: Tuesday, 16 June 2026
Time: 09:00 AM
Venue: UMT Main Building, Room No. 2S-38
The session highlighted that airplanes do not actually defy gravity — rather, they harness the fundamental laws of physics to achieve flight. The speaker explained how a wing generates lift through pressure differences created by airflow, how engine thrust propels an aircraft forward, and how these forces interact with drag and gravity to keep an aircraft airborne. Attendees gained a clear understanding of the four fundamental forces of flight — Lift, Thrust, Drag, and Gravity — and how their balance determines whether an aircraft climbs, cruises, or descends. Participants gained valuable insight into the physics behind flight, deepening their understanding of aerodynamic principles that govern everyday aviation. The lecture was attended by MS/PhD Physics students, faculty members, and researchers with an interest in applied physics and aerodynamics. Special thanks and shoutout appreciation to Ms. Hira Yaseen and Assistant Professor Dr. Shamsa Kanwal for organzing the lecture. The Department of Physics extends its gratitude to Ms. Meelad Aslam for delivering an insightful and engaging lecture, and thanks all faculty members and students who participated in the session.
