Department of Life Sciences

Message From Chairperson

Welcome to the web pages of Department of Life Sciences, University of Management and Technology. It is an immense pleasure to greet prospective students, current students, alumni, and visitors. Our mission is to lead in understanding life, from molecules to cells, and organisms to ecosystems. The faculty is committed to excellence in research and education and are proud of the outstanding students and staff who make this possible. Our understanding of the fundamentals of life is persistently growing, becoming more nuanced and erudite every year. As Life Sciences Department, we form a community dedicated to understanding the natural world from global ecosystems down to molecular interactions. We discover new knowledge and train nascent scientists.

The life sciences area is collection of disciplines that investigate the structure and function of living things from molecules to entire ecosystems. The life sciences are rapidly progressing and exciting fields of study that include: animal biology, bacteriology, biochemistry, cell biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics, molecular biology, plant biology, physiology, and virology. The life sciences are vital to further increase our understanding of human health, environmental issues, and broader matters that increase our understanding of the web of life on earth. Department of Life Sciences offers Baccalaureate in Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Forensics Science. Graduate programs are also offered in Biochemistry and Biotechnology. The department is proud of energetic and co-operating faculty who perform cutting-edge research addressing questions of relevance to medicine and life sciences, biotechnology, pharmacology, agriculture and environmental change. We engage and embrace a community of students who join us as scientists, scholars and educators. We immerse ourselves in undergraduate education, nurturing our students’ eagerness to explore the natural world by submerging them in syllabi promoting critical thinking, as well as welcoming them into research to make them active contributors in scientific discovery. Graduate training is entrenched in innovative, high-impact research but includes proficient growth to open up careers in bio-industry, scientific communication and publishing, government and public policy, forensic science, medical research, or academia. Research interests in the life sciences include biochemistry, bioinformatics, biophysics, cell and computational biology, enzymology, gene regulation, genomics, genetics, microbiology, proteomics, structural biology, virology, and theoretical biology.

If you are a prospective student, I encourage you to examine our curriculum, coursework and laboratory offerings that make our department superlative. Also, examine our faculty web pages to discover the breadth and depth of their interests and the research opportunities in our lab. If you are interested in becoming a new student in our life sciences program, please see admission information on our main UMT website.

Welcome to our world; it is a wonderful place to be.
