Overview
Chemistry is truly the central science and underpins much of the efforts of scientists and engineers to improve life for humankind. Chemistry was the most important science for Alfred Nobel’s own work. The development of his inventions as well as the industrial processes he employed was based upon chemical knowledge. Chemistry was the second prize area that Nobel mentioned in his will. So many of the luxuries, today, we have become accustomed to, would not have been possible without recent advancements in Chemistry. One must think of all the super strong adhesives, fibers, and building materials that are used every day in construction, and production. Without an understanding of Chemistry, the development of these materials, in addition to the development of things like prescription drugs, would never have been possible.
The Department of Chemistry, UMT offers research-intensive PhD degree program in Chemistry, giving talented, motivated students the chance to make discoveries in chemical science, biochemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, material chemistry, nano chemistry and related disciplines. PhD Chemistry programs allow students to gain experience working closely with faculty, peers and seasoned professionals in order to conduct his or her research in chemistry. The students are expected to have the ability in academic study and technology research and development, so as to serve the industry and contribute to society and the country. Students work and research topics in various discipline of chemistry, and they complete extensive research and experiments. The Department of Chemistry, UMT has particular strengths in biological chemistry and organic synthesis, computational and theoretical chemistry, materials chemistry (inorganic and polymer), magnetic resonance and structural chemistry, radiochemistry, environmental chemistry and nanoscience. All of our students will benefit from a flexible schedule, hands-on research opportunities, individual faculty attention, and close relationships with scientists from other departments and disciplines.
Aims of the Program
The Department of Chemistry under School of Science at UMT offers a program of Ph.D. degree for the students whose goal is a career in scientific research. The program is specifically designed with the goal of preparing students for a life time of independent research and scientific leadership in the chemical sciences, through careers in academia, industry or government. In consideration of the mission of the University, this program aims to:
- Teach the students to establish a concrete foundation in the profession and improve the ability of further study to cope with the changing science and technology industry.
- Train the students’ customs of practice and realistic spirit, improve the ability in cross-industry study, and the teamwork spirit.
- Consolidate the diversity of viewpoints, approaches and balance between basic and applied research in Chemistry, offering a rich intellectual atmosphere.
- Develop the skill to perform a critical analysis of scientific research problems in the field of chemistry.
- Provide graduate students with an integrated broad-based training in the various disciplines related to Chemistry.
- Cultivate the students' conscientious working attitude, and to train students to face challenges and make innovations.
- Achieve a molecular level understanding of the natural world and thus forms the basis for much of modern Chemistry.
- Prepare students for independent research careers in academia or industry.
Career Prospects
Studying chemistry allows you to develop subject-specific and transferable skills which are valued by all employers, meaning future careers of students do not have to be in a laboratory, but also equally valued in industry.
The main employers of chemistry graduates are in the chemical and related industries, such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, petrochemicals, toiletries, plastics and polymers. However, those who studied chemistry may enter many different sectors including the food and drink industry, utilities and research, health and medical organizations and scientific research organizations and agencies. PhD chemistry graduates may adopt following careers;
- Teaching and Research in Public and private Universities
- Chemical Industries (Fertilizers, Cement, Paint and Dyes, polymer, Glass Industry etc)
- Atomic Energy
- Food scientist
- Pharmaceutical Industry
- Chemical Research and Development
- Pharmacy, Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry.
- Forensic Scientist, Patent Lawyer
- Environmental Analyst
- Technical Advisor.
- Quality Control.
- Technical Sales and Service
- Technical and Science Writing.
- Government Organizations (Agriculture Department, Irrigation Department etc)
- Environment Protection Agencies
